What is a Clinical Psychologist?

Clinical psychologists undergo extensive education and training in order to be able to practice. As a minimum this consists of an undergraduate degree, followed by a doctorate in clinical psychology. Following qualification, they are required to register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and are bound by professional and ethical standards to which they must adhere to. Due to the nature of the doctoral training course, Clinical psychologists have a range of experience supporting people from across the lifespan. They have often also undergone specialist training to further enhance their practice, i.e. in different therapeutic models or with particular client groups. They are trained to provide evidence-based psychological interventions following comprehensive assessment and formulation, with the overall objective being to reduce distress and enhance wellbeing. In addition, they are experienced in using a range of approaches, i.e. CBT, ACT, EMDR, and are able to integrate models in order to provide personalised treatment plans that best match the difficulties of each client.

My Approach

I am a qualified clinical psychologist with over 12 years experience across NHS services, charity sector and independent practice. I am also a practice director of The Parkstone Practice. Everybody experiences psychological distress at some point but sometimes this can get in the way of us living a full and meaningful life. When this happens, talking therapy can help us to reflect on how we got to where we are and explore ways of moving forward. As a clinical psychologist I have experience helping people with a range of difficulties including anxiety, depression and low mood, trauma and low self-esteem. I also have experience of working with neurodivergence, including autism and ADHD.

During sessions I will create a safe space for you to reflect, build on your strengths and enhance skills for nurturing your own wellbeing. This will be done collaboratively, compassionately and at a pace you feel comfortable with. As well as virtual appointments, I am able to offer in person sessions at a therapy clinic located in Bournemouth.

Please note I do not work with people under the age of 18.
